I'm nervous excited about a project!

I was approached by Michael Hollman from Cabinets of Curiosity to put forward a design for a piece of Art to adorn one of three Virgin Media boxes in Royal Tunbridge Wells Town Center. This I was very excited to do. Having always lived the idea of creating some public art. Something that could be enjoyed but anyone passing by.

This is my design. As many of you know I love Swallows. To me they signify summer, lighter days, promise. Their joy for life, swooping and arcing across the sky. Teamed with rich sunset colours for an eye catching artwork for all to enjoy. I’ve titled the piece ‘Reach for the Skies’ as this is exactly how those Swallows inspire me.

I’ll be working on this in the next few weeks. I will announce on my social media  accounts when I’ll be there. It would be lovely if some of you could drop by. I’d love to share the experience with you. There will be a cleaning and base coat day, probably not so interesting and then the colour begins. Followed by the Swallows.

The other artists painting boxes around the town are

Sophie Cook and Louise Dean: outside Côte,"Town Mouse and Country Mouse"

Elaine Thompson: Church Road against the retaining wall of Trinity Theatre, "Cunning Tricks"

Sue Vass: Goods Station road by entrance to Victoria Place carpark, "The Hard Edge and the Curve".

all our works are very different. It will make a very interesting tour once they are all done.

Here is more information about the project

An exciting art project progressing in Tunbridge Wells. This is phase 2 of a project to transform some of our utilitarian street furniture - Virgin Media telecommunications cabinets in this phase - into unique pieces of public art.

Who is behind this initiative?

'Refresh Tunbridge Wells' - a small, local charity, established to rejuvenate and

'refresh' the spa-town heritage of Tunbridge Wells, by encouraging the provision of publicly available works of art.

Who are the artists?

For phase 2, we have commissioned five local talented artists. We hope you will agree that their designs will transform these cabinets into something we can all admire, enjoy and cherish.

What is the theme of the artwork?

'Rus in urbe', in other words bringing the sights and delights of the countryside into our town centre, with an emphasis on wildlife, colour and whimsicality.

Who has paid for this initiative?

Matched funding between Refresh Tunbridge Wells and the Royal Tunbridge Wells

Business Improvement District (BID).

What did phase 1 look like?

Phase 1 was in Calverley Precinct. The transformation of these Openreach cabinets was formally recognised by the Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society, who awarded Refresh Tunbridge Wells and the artist with a 'Public Artwork' certificate.

What else has Refresh Tunbridge Wells done?

Two other schemes to date: the creation by Chris Burke of a time-line mural on Tunbridge Wells Station to replace the original murals by Brian Barnes (left); and the restoration of the 'Love

176i

Fountain' in St John's Park & Meadows (right).
